Anxiety. The first definition I found when I looked it up is as follows: "A state of uneasiness and apprehension, as about future uncertainties." Anxiety can be absolutely paralyzing to an individual who suffers from it. Some of us are more inclined to be anxious than others, for one reason or another. Whatever the underlying reason is, anxiety can keep us imprisoned, unable to make decisions, unable to enjoy life, or even unable to fully trust the Lord as we try to control our own lives rather than submitting to his plans.
As I read the words of Jesus in Matthew 6:25-27, I ask myself, where is my trust at? Do I fully believe that even if my life comes with hardships or painful loss, that I can still fully trust him with my life and say that he is a good God? If my worst nightmares came true, would my faith be shipwrecked? If I choose to live in an anxious state, how can I make my life any better? In the end, none of us truly has control, there are always going to be things out of our reach and able to remind us that we are not the masters of our lives. It's ok to have anxiety, but it's what we do with it that matters. Do we allow it to call the shots in our lives, letting it be master rather than our Lord? Or do we choose to walk forward in faith, putting our trust in God even when we don't understand why something is happening? I believe that when we walk in faith in spite of fear and anxiety, that we come to have the peace that he offers us: "And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus," (Philippians 4:7 NIV).
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?"
(Matthew 6:25-27 NIV)
